NEOM’s Futuristic City Adapts to Development Challenges
Saudi Arabia’s ambitious urban project, ‘The Line,’ a central component of the NEOM initiative, aims to redefine modern city living by constructing a 170-kilometre linear city without cars, streets, or carbon emissions. Designed to accommodate nine million residents, the revolutionary city will offer all essential services within a five-minute walk.
However, recent reports suggest that by 2030, only a 1.5-mile segment of the project may be completed, reflecting a potential scaling back from the original vision. Satellite images have revealed significant construction progress, including the development of the ‘Hidden Marina,’ the project’s initial residential zone.
Amid these adjustments, concerns regarding worker safety and living conditions during construction have surfaced. Despite these challenges, NEOM’s Chief Development Officer, Denis Hickey, has reiterated the project’s commitment to innovative urban solutions and environmental sustainability.
‘The Line’ remains one of the most groundbreaking urban planning concepts globally. If successfully executed, it will set a new benchmark for smart, sustainable city development and redefine the future of urban living.
